William Whipple

Sacrifices made during the Revolution

During the 1778 campaign in Rhode Island, Whipple was almost killed when British artillery fire exploded directly near him. Another close call occurred in a field house where enemy cannon fire tore through a tethered horse just outside his room, severely wounding one of his brigade majors. During the Revolution, his enslaved servant, Prince Whipple, challenged him on the hypocrisy of fighting for liberty while holding another man in bondage. Whipple relinquished his property rights by emancipating Prince.

Leaving a highly successful medical practice in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Thornton lead the New Hampshire Committee of Safety, drafting the state's first constitution. He went on to gain the presidency of the New Hampshire Provincial Congress.

 

Josiah Bartlett
Josiah Bartlett

Born: Amesbury, MA Age when signing: 46 years old

Religious Belief: Universalist

Occupation: Physician

Achievements: Second to sign the Declaration of Independence

4th Governor of New Hampshire Chief Justice of the Superior Court in New Hampshire


Sacrifices made during the Revolution

In 1774, Loyalists burned down Bartlett's home in Kingston, New Hampshire. While he was serving in the Continental Congress, his wife was left alone to manage their farm and relocate their 12 children.
